Many RNs have contacted NYSNA regarding the Patricia K. McGee Nursing Faculty Scholarship program. While the program was re-authorized through 2015, and funding was appropriated, the larger budget bill containing the program was vetoed by Gov. David Paterson for unrelated reasons. Until the legislature returns to complete the budget process, the McGee Scholarship Program remains on hold.
NYSNA is working to ensure the program continues, and are hoping to include retroactive language into the legislature's actions. More program information is available online, as well as details on the 2010-2011 Enacted Budget Report.
This past semester, more than 200 nursing students participated in NYSNA's Grassroots Program for Students. The program takes tomorrow's nurses from the classroom to the Capitol, where many received clinical hour credit. Students toured the Capitol and observed the Senate and Assembly during a session. Some students met with their Assembly member or Senator to speak about legislative goals.
The program proved successful with students and legislators. NYSNA is preparing the program for the fall semester. Faculty members interested in their students participating are invited to contact Kristin Abrams at 518.782.9400, ext. 245 to register.
