Safe Staffing Victory at Montefiore

Nurses at Montefiore's Weiler hospital have won a victory for Safe Staffing – and now 15 new RNs positions are on the fast track.

Before our campaign, patients and nurses in the Weiler Emergency Department faced inadequate staffing, overcrowding, delays in assessing and reassessing patients, and high turnover among RNs due to stressful working conditions.

We repeatedly brought these issues to management's attention. They refused to hire more RNs. So we organized. Over the course of the spring, we collected 128 protests of assignment with over 862 signatures. We spoke out at a press conference with local elected leaders about the conditions in the ED, attended a local Community Board meeting, and met with the Board’s Health and Services Committee.

Because of our movement, 15 RN positions were added on a fast track. By taking action for safe staffing, nurses are making a difference in the lives of our patients!
