Hudson Valley and Capital Region RNs Endorse Federal and State Candidates

With elections coming up November 4, RNs are mobilizing to get out the vote for candidates who support patient care. Today, NYSNA members from the Hudson Valley and the Capital Region endorsed candidates running in the November general election at events in Albany and Westchester. Nurses are excited to announce endorsements of the following candidates:

For Congress

  • Paul Tonko
  • Sean Eldridge

For NY State Senate

  • Andrea Stewart Cousins
  • Justin Wagner
  • David Carlucci
  • George Latimer
  • Ruth Hassell-Thompson

For NY State Assembly

  • J. Gary Pretlow
  • Shelley Mayer
  • Andrew Falk
  • Tom Abinanti
  • David Buchwald
  • Amy Paulin
  • Steve Otis
“Each of these candidates are champions for the issues that matter most to nurses and healthcare professionals: federal and state legislation to require safe RN-to-patient staffing limits for nurses, and quality and affordable healthcare options for our patients,” said Sam Caquias, RN and NYSNA leader at Westchester Medical Center.

Each of the candidates has a vision for the future of our communities and a commitment to fighting for issues that are important to nurses and our patients.

“Moving toward Election Day, NYSNA will commit the full force of our union into ensuring a strong Democratic majority in the House of Representatives,” said Carol Ann Lemon, RN, BC and member of NYSNA’s Board of Directors. “We want to make sure that all of NYSNA’s endorsed candidates work toward passing progressive legislation, including an increase in the minimum wage, safe staffing ratios, the Dream Act, campaign finance reform, and women’s rights.”

NYSNA leaders recommended these endorsements on the basis of candidates’ strong records of leadership on issues including advocacy for high quality patient care, support for safer nurse-to-patient staffing ratios in area hospitals, improving opportunities and access in the healthcare sector, strengthening government services, and championing middle class and working families.
