Last weekend, more than 70 NYSNA nurses traveled to Chicago to join with fellow union members from across the country to share ideas and learn new skills so that we can win more for our patie

On Friday, NYSNA nurses rallied with community activists and fellow RNs in support of the Robin Hood Tax in both Chicago and NYC. Nurses united to call for Wall Street to pay their fair share in order to stop the tide of growing inequality and support struggling hospitals and quality healthcare for all.

The state removed the application of Big Apple Dialysis Management, LLC from the agenda of the scheduled March 27 meeting of the NYS Department of Health’s Public Health and Health Planning Council, due to efforts by the administration of Mayor Bill de Blasio.

Big Apple is a for-profit dialysis company that wants to take over four chronic dialysis facilities now within New York City’s public hospital system. But patients, caregivers, nurses, doctors, and elected leaders have united to stop the privatization of chronic dialysis services at HHC.

“Removing dialysis patients from the public hospital clinics is ill-conceived,” said Anne Bové, RN, president of the HHC Executive Council of the New York State Nurses Association. “A for-profit company with a problematic track record in these services will not provide the same level of quality care to our patients and we question whether the savings figures are accurate, as well.”

The Central Brooklyn Independent Democrats honored NYSNA for our work in saving Brooklyn hospitals at their awards dinner on Sunday, April 6th at The Grand Prospect Hall in Brooklyn.

City & State Magazine's "Above & Beyond Awards" recognize "25 enormously accomplished women for their excellence," and NYSNA Executive Director, Jill Furillo, is one of this year's winners. The winners are described by City and State as "truly women of 'public and civic mind,'" and include women in a variety of professions influencing New York.

NYSNA retirees are an important part of our union: they can remain active, even following retirement. Many former RNs commit time and continued effort to our cause.

Some familiar faces are going up on bus shelters across New York City: our fellow HHC nurses talking about why our public hospital system is so important to the people of our city.

We go above and beyond to care for our patients every day. We're building a powerful movement of patients, lawmakers, and caregivers to defend and expand our public hospital system.

We are very excited to have launched the new NYSNA website! Our new website features a complete re-design, simplified navigation, a blog, and brand-new content. And it's designed to adapt to mobile phones and tablets, too.

We'd love to hear from NYSNA members--what do you think of the new site?

Make sure to save the date for Lobby Day on May 20th! This event is for all nurses in NY State, including those that are not NYSNA members. We are joining our allies in 1199SEIU, CWA, PEF, and other unions in calling on our lawmakers to create laws ensuring safe nurse-to-patient staffing ratios.

This is an issue that is important to all RNs in NY State, and we want to encourage everyone, regardless of affiliation, to attend this event.

Please see our flier here, and check in on the website for updates regarding logistics! We will keep you posted.

A dangerous last-minute budget proposal from the governor's office would amend the Nurse Practice Act to deregulate the practice of nursing — and open the door wider to corporate-driven healthcare institutions who want to replace skilled nurses with underpaid and untrained workers. This is a direct assault on quality care and access to care.

Yesterday, more than 1,000 nurses got on buses to Albany for our Safe Staffing Lobby Day. We quickly moved into action and expanded our lobby visits so that we could respond to this attack on patient safety and nursing practice.

We doubled our planned lobby visits and met with more than 170 lawmakers and their staffers. We asked our lawmakers to support the Safe Staffing for Quality Care Act and also asked for them to stand with us against any changes to the Nurse Practice Act.
