Status as an Approved Provider Unit establishes the provider’s ability to award contact hours for continuing nursing education activities that have been planned, developed, implemented, and evaluated by the provider. Approved Provider Units may offer an unlimited number of educational activities during the approval period. Approved Provider Unit status may be applied for after an applicant has been providing nursing educational activities for a minimum of 6 months, and has received NYSNA approval of three continuing nursing education activities (each for a minimum of 1 contact hour) within the past 2 years.
Starting on August 1, 2009, organizations that target more than 50% of their educational activities to RNs in multiple regions (refer to the DHHS regions available online) may not apply to be Approved Provider Units through NYSNA. If, however, the additional targeted areas are states that are contiguous to the applicant organization’s primary region, they are still eligible to become Approved Provider Units.
Organizations that target more than 50% of their educational activities to RNs in multiple regions should contact the ANCC to become Accredited Provider Units. Alternatively, they may submit individual educational activities to NYSNA for approval of contact hours.
Organizations that are commercial interests are ineligible for Approved Provider Unit status. A ‘commercial interest’ is defined as “any entity either producing, marketing, re-selling, or distributing healthcare goods or services consumed by, or used on, patients or that is owned or controlled by an entity that produces, markets, re-sells, or distributes healthcare goods or services consumed by, or used on, patient” (ANCC 2009). This definition allows an Approved Provider Unit to have a sister or parent company that is a commercial interest, as long as adequate firewalls exist that insulate the educational activities from the commercial operations, and that these firewalls are evident in organizational charts, reporting structure, and business practices.
The fee for the Provider Unit Application is $1350. The approval period is 3 years.
Three copies of the application and all attachments must be submitted with the fee. Approved Provider Unit applications must be limited to 75 sheets of paper (may print on both sides). The approval process takes approximately 8-10 weeks.
Applications must be mailed to NYSNA. We cannot accept application online or via e-mail.
