“Clinical Nurse to Educator: Embracing the Transition to Teaching”

The role transition between clinical practice to nursing faculty can be one of the most rewarding, yet confusing changes in a nursing career. Many novice faculty have questions about the academic environment, role expectations, teaching approaches, clinical supervision, and evaluation of students. This intensive 2-day workshop is designed to help new faculty increase their understanding of the faculty role and give faculty mentors methods for facilitating the transition. New clinical and classroom faculty and clinical nurses interested in becoming educators will benefit.
Presentations, discussion, questions, and interactive exercises will help participants refine practical strategies to use with students.

Barbara K. Penn, PhD, RN, BC is Director of Member Education for the American Association of Colleges of Nursing, Washington, D.C. Dr. Penn has taught, administered, and consulted in a variety of educational settings, including hospital staff development, hospital and university continuing education, vocational nursing schools, undergraduate and graduate education, faculty development, state and national professional associations, and national level education policy development. As Director of Member Education at the American Association of Colleges of Nursing, she is responsible for planning and implementing ten annual conferences and other national faculty development initiatives for nursing deans and faculty.

Lydia R. Zager, MSN, RN, NEA-BC, is Director, Center for Nursing Leadership, College of Nursing at the University of South Carolina. Ms. Zager is a 2004 graduate fellow of the Amy V. Cockcroft Leadership Development Program, a program that prepares nurse executive leaders for a variety of healthcare organizational leadership roles. She co-developed a middle management leadership certificate program for healthcare providers and has made numerous state and national presentations on leadership and leadership development. Ms. Zager is a popular and sought after resource in developing critical thinking for action in nursing practice and patient safety for faculty development consultations and workshops.

Contact Hours

12.0 contact hours will be awarded for the 2 days. In order to receive contact hours, participants are required to attend the entire session and complete an evaluation.

Fees/Accommodation Information

Course fee includes continental breakfast, lunch and breaks for both days. Registration deadline: July 26, 2010.

Hotel Reservations

NYSNA has reserved a limited number of rooms at Hotel Indigo at a special rate of $99. per night. Reservations can be made by calling 518.869.9100 and referencing the code NFG. Reservations must be made no later than July 1, 2010 to be guaranteed the special rate.

Cancellation Policy

Space in this workshop is limited. Registrations will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. A $50
administrative fee will be deducted for cancellations received after July 26. NYSNA reserves the right to cancel this workshop if a sufficient number of participants are not registered in which case the entire registration fee will be refunded.
