The Politically Active Nurse: Advocating for Nurses Legislative Priorities (2.0 CH)

Purpose: Nurses, as professionals, must gain knowledge about the political system and develop professional advocacy values. Political involvement encompasses being knowledgeable about the political process, laws, and healthcare issues and policy. Politically active nurses accept the challenges and responsibilities in addressing injustices within the healthcare arena. Strategies for advocacy and involvement in the political area will be reviewed, including political awareness, methods of lobbying, and advocating through the professional nurses association.

Objectives: At the conclusion of this program, the learner will be able to:

• Identify components of the advocacy agenda on NY RNs
• Explain how Safe Staffing saves lives and saves money
• Identify why lobbying for safe staffing legislation is important to improve patient outcomes
• Tell an unsafe staffing or safe staffing / workplace violence story that illustrates the need for this law
• Respond to difficult questions from legislators about the Safe Staffing bill

The Politically Active Nurse: The Impact of Advocacy at Lobby Day (1.0 CH)

Purpose: Nurses, as professionals, must gain knowledge about the political system and develop professional advocacy values. Political involvement encompasses being knowledgeable about the political process, laws, and healthcare issues and policy. Nurse advocates accept the challenges and responsibilities in addressing injustices within the healthcare arena and workplace. Discussions will include different arenas in which safe staffing advocacy can take pla and the impact advocating at Lobby Day can have in facilitating healthcare policy changes.

Objectives: At the conclusion of the program, this learner will be able to :

• Reflect on the impact of RN advocacy
• Identify the components of a NY RN strategic plan for advocacy in 2014
• Explain how a strategic plan can advance Safe Staffing
