8:00 – 9:00 AM Keynote:
Safe patient handling: What research tells us (1.0 contact hour)

More than half of the nurses now in practice will experience a musculoskeletal injury during their working lives. Linda H. Aiken, PhD, RN, FAAN, FRCN, will share research findings that can improve patient handling practices and prevent injuries to both nurses and patients. Aiken is a widely published nurse researcher and is the Claire Fagin Leadership Professor at the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing.

Objectives:

  • Learn how research findings link hospital care environments to patient safety.
  • Discuss strategies to document improved patient outcomes.
9:15 – 11:45 AM Professional Issues/Voting Body (2.0 contact hours)

Today’s session will welcome nurses to the convention and features reports from NYSNA President Linda O’Brien and Barbara Zittel, executive secretary of the New York State Board for Nursing.

Objectives:
  • Identify current nursing issues in New York and beyond.
  • Describe how Voting Body contributes to achieving NYSNA’s goals to promote the nursing profession and protect the public.
11:45 AM–12:45 PM Treasurer’s Session

The treasurer and finance committee will answer questions about the finances of the association. Balance sheet and income statements will be available.
12:45 – 2:15 PM Practice Focus Group Business Meetings (1.5 contact hours)

Meet with other nurses in your practice area or setting and discuss issues of common concern. The five PFGs include adult, family/maternal child, behavioral, public, and gerontological health.

Objectives:
  • Identify professional nursing issues of interest or concern to unit members.
  • Discuss the unit’s role in working with the Council on Nursing Practice to address its members’ areas of concern.
12:45 - 1:45 PM Parliamentary Consultation

The NYSNA Parliamentarian will be available to answer questions about Voting Body procedures and assist members who may want to write resolutions for presentation to the Voting Body.
2:30 – 3:45 PM Practice Focus Groups Forum (1.25 contact hours)

All five PFGs will join the Council on Nursing Practice to share issues that were discussed during the individual PFG meetings. Members will have the opportunity to interact with council members and propose ways to address their practice concerns.

Objectives:
  • Identify three issues that were discussed in the Practice Focus Group meetings.
  • Discuss the role of the Council on Nursing Practice in addressing these issues and concerns.
4:00 – 5:00 PM Concurrent CE Sessions (1.0 contact hour each)

Track 1: “Diabesity”: The Diabetes-Obesity Connection

The incidence of Type 2 diabetes has doubled over the past 30 years among middle-aged Americans. The increase has been connected to rising obesity rates and sedentary lifestyles. Learn from a certified diabetes educator how these two conditions are related and how they are influencing other healthcare issues, such as obstructive sleep disorders and bariatric surgery.

Objectives:
  • List the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute guidelines for the diagnosis and management of obesity.
  • Describe current attitudes towards bariatric surgery.
  • Review the commonly performed bariatric surgeries.
  • Discuss the impact of bariatric surgery on patients with diabetes.

Track 2: Will You Still Need Me, Will You Still Feed Me, When I’m 64?

When 78 million Baby Boomers reach retirement age, what will be their impact on the American healthcare system? What is the significance of this generation’s fascination with youth? These and other questions will be explored, including the effect on health care when this generation of nurses retires en masse.

Objectives:
  • Review the terminology and statistics related to Baby Boomers.
  • Describe the impact of 78 million Baby Boomers on America.
  • Recognize the issues faced by an aging workforce.
  • Recognize implications of the anticipated U.S. workforce shortage; identify recruitment and retention strategies.
  • Compare initiatives, opportunities, and solutions for the future of health care.

Track 3: Forum on Legislative Issues

Shaun Flynn, Director, NYSNA Governmental Affairs

The 2009 session of the New York State Legislature presented both challenges and opportunities to the nursing profession. This session will review some of these issues, describe the inner workings of the legislative process, and provide a preview of the upcoming session and the 2010 elections.

Objectives:
  • Describe NYSNA’s process for supporting and opposing legislation.
  • Identify NYSNA’s priority issues for the 2009 legislative session.
  • Discuss the outlook for nursing issues in 2010 and beyond.

Track 4: Horizontal Hostility: Your Role in Ending Hostile Behaviors in Nursing

Julie Brunell, RN, Champlain Valley Physicians Medical Center, Plattsburgh, NY

Unfortunately, nurse-to-nurse behaviors are not always conducive to the supportive, high-quality work environment we all want. Learn about the historical and theoretical background of nurse-to-nurse hostility in the workplace and best practices to use in addressing these behaviors head-on. There are actions each of us can take to reduce horizontal hostility and increase staff satisfaction, retention, service, and quality of care.

Objectives:
  • Identify current and best practices for a healthy work environment.
  • Synthesize why there is nurse-to-nurse hostility.
  • Outline the impact of horizontal hostility.
  • Identify a variety of potential strategies to combat horizontal hostility, both individual and group.
5:15 - 6:15 PM Board of Directors Forum

This will be an open forum on proposed bylaws changes and current organizational/professional issues.
6:00 – 8:30 PM Exhibit Hall: Opening Night
