Convention 2009

‘Labor Day’ Events: Thursday, October 8

Especially for Our Bargaining Unit Members!

Start off your Convention experience by learning and discussing the role of union representation in empowering nurses in the workplace. If you’re arriving on Wednesday, October 7, plan to attend our networking reception that evening from 8:00 to 10:00 PM.

Please Note: ‘Labor Day’ events are open only to members of NYSNA local bargaining units. For non-LBU members, Convention activities begin at 3:45 PM on Thursday, October 8.

Time Event/Information
8:00 - 11:00 AM Congress of Bargaining Unit Leaders Meeting (1.0 contact hour)

The Congress includes the leaders of NYSNA bargaining units from throughout New York and New Jersey. Join us to learn about and to discuss issues that affect RNs at work. Speaker Glenna Cole Slattery will share the history of the National Labor Relations Act and how it has affected nurses.
11:00 AM - 12:30 PM ‘Labor Day’ Unity Brunch (1.0 contact hour; ticketed event; see Registration)

Celebrate solidarity and network with colleagues at our annual brunch. This year’s event will include a presentation by members of the executive board of the new National Federation of Nurses and conferral of the Delegate Assembly Award. This is a ticketed event (see “Special Events” section of registration form).
12:30 - 3:30 PM Delegate Assembly Meeting (1.5 contact hours)

The Delegate Assembly includes elected representatives from NYSNA bargaining units. It helps to create and direct policy related to the association’s union activities. All LBU members are invited to attend this meeting and share their concerns with DA members.

The afternoon’s highlight will be a performance by Holly Near, a singer, songwriter, actor, and activist. Over the past 25 years, she has traveled from California, where she stood with the United Farm Workers, to El Salvador, where she sang for peace amidst war and conflict. Whether in support of nurses striking for better conditions in the emergency room or in opposition to police violence, Holly Near sings a bold truth.
