More than 200 NYSNA members from Long Island College Hospital in Brooklyn picketed on a snowy, freezing Feb. 3 to protest their stalled contract negotiations and management’s refusal to honor its commitments.
The 450 registered nurses have been without a contract since July. Complicating negotiations is the hospital’s possible sale by its parent corporation, Continuum Health Partners, to SUNY Downstate Medical Center. Continuum is refusing to honor a clause that has been in NYSNA’s contract for 12 years that secures all of the nurses’ jobs in case the hospital is sold.
LICH RNs are committed to helping the hospital function smoothly through this transition, and don’t feel that management is reciprocating. The LICH nurses took part in two sessions of picketing, one in the early morning and the second during the afternoon.
