New York - June 3, 2008 – More than 1,000 nurses walked the sidewalk in front of three different New York Presbyterian facilities to picket for a contract to insure safe staffing and retiree health benefits.
Early in the morning, from 7:30 – 9:00 a.m., more than 500 nurses picketed in front of the Milstein Building on Ft. Washington Avenue between West 165th and 168th Streets. From 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m., pickets were held at Children’s Hospital at Broadway and West 165th Street, the Allen Pavilion at Broadway and West 220th Street, and again at the Milstein Building.
“Our nurses have been working without a contract since January,” said Roberta Murphy, NYSNA Nurse Representative for New York Presbyterian. “At this point management will only discuss retiree health benefits at the expense of staffing. We will not trade safe staffing for benefits.”
The New York State Nurses Association is the voice for nursing in the Empire State. With more than 36,000 members, it is the state's largest union and professional association for registered nurses. It supports nurses and nursing practice through education, research, legislative advocacy, and collective bargaining.
