NYSNA members, leadership and staff gathered in picturesque Rye Brook on September 26 and 27 for the Association's Annual Business Meeting.
The meeting began with the traditional “Labor Day” on Friday, featuring sessions of the Congress of Bargaining Unit Leaders and the Delegate Assembly. The Congress heard from Henry Nicholas, president of the National Union of Hospital and Health Care Employees, AFSCME, AFL-CIO. The Delegate Assembly discussed both local and national labor issues. An afternoon plenary session featured a presentation by public health nurse Barbara Glickstein, who discussed the RN's role in fighting human trafficking. Friday evening events included a dinner supporting the NYSNA-PAC and a social event open to all attendees.
Saturday started with the inaugural meetings of NYSNA's Practice Focus Groups, with each electing members to leadership positions. An open forum was held following the individual meetings, where leadership was introduced and initial goals were defined and discussed. Inspirational author and speaker Jackie Pflug offered the keynote address, “The Courage to Succeed,” during a luncheon event.
The day concluded with the official Voting Body session for the membership. While no offical business was conducted due to lack of a quorum, the afternoon included remarks from Association leadership, reports from select Committees and an address by Barbara Zittel, RN, secretary of the State Board for Nursing. Shaun Flynn, director of the Association's Governmental Affairs Department, received the Presidential Award. Results of the Association-wide elections were announced, including:
