New York representative to introduce single-payer amendment

Congressman Anthony Weiner (D-Brooklyn, Queens) plans to introduce an amendment that would substitute the single-payer bill (HR 676) for the newly drafted House healthcare reform bill, America’s Affordable Health Choices Act of 2009. The amendment will be introduced in the House Energy and Commerce Committee.

The New York State Nurses Association applauds Rep. Weiner for championing this significant amendment and commends him for seeking to end a system based on private insurance.

“While we understand the complexities of creating an entirely new healthcare structure, our members believe a comprehensive, single-payer system is the only option that makes sense,” said Deborah Elliott, Deputy Executive Officer of the Nurses Association.

NYSNA urges New York nurses to call Rep. Weiner: 202.225.6616, or e-mail to thank him for his support for single-payer.

The New York State Nurses Association is the voice for nursing in the Empire State. With more than 36,000 members, it is the state's largest union and professional association for registered nurses. It supports nurses and nursing practice through education, research, legislative advocacy, and collective bargaining.
