It has been reported that some school districts have employed LPNs, expecting them to carry out the professional duties of RNs. The scopes of practice for RNs and LPNs are not interchangeable. LPNs exceeding their scope of practice could face professional misconduct charges, while schools employing them could be exposed to potential litigation.
The State Education Department has issued a memorandum, describing the use of LPNs and the term “school nurse” in school settings. The memorandum is attached (.pdf format; Adobe Acrobat Reader required). If you have questions related to this notice, contact NYSNA's Education, Practice and Research Program.
