Payment of Collaborating Physicians by Nurse Practitioners (2006)

In an attempt to offer guidance to Nurse Practitioners (NPs) whose collaborating physician(s) expect some form of payment for the services they render, the New York State Board for Nursing (SBN) issued a memorandum in July 2006 clarifying when such payment is appropriate.

An NP may pay a collaborating physician fair market value for services such as chart review and consultation, but there is no compulsion for the NP to enter into such an arrangement. When a payment agreement does exist, it is not appropriate to include such terms within the written collaborative agreement nor should it influence the nature of the chart review.
