Join your nurse colleagues for practical knowledge and camaraderie at NYSNA’s Convention in Niagara Falls, NY, Sept. 22-25!

This year’s theme is “Healthcare: powered by nurses.” Like the awe-inspiring power of Niagara Falls, NYSNA members continue to channel their strength to pursue legislative advocacy, enhance educational opportunities and share best practices for patient care. Convention 2011 is the place to gather to celebrate accomplishments and help set the agenda for nursing’s future.

NYSNA local bargaining unit members are invited to attend “Labor Day” events which focus on the issues that affect unionized registered nurses. Delegate Assembly members will meet to discuss the association’s union activities.

Continuing education credits can be earned at convention in the following four tracks of “Clinical Innovations,” “Contemporary Issues,” “Legislative Advocacy” and “Professional Development.”

Not-to-miss highlights

When planning your convention schedule, consider some of these sessions and activities:

Kelly McLean, RN, will address the Congress of Bargaining Unit leaders on Thursday and share her personal story of on-the-job violence. Life changed forever for McLean when she was attacked by a patient while working at Erie County Medical Center last summer. She will help lead a discussion of violence risks and strategies for prevention. Open to NYSNA LBU members.
Surgery, guaranteed? The Cardiac Surgery Warranty program at Ellis Hospital in Schenectady, NY promises that if a patient develops related complications within 90 days of coronary bypass surgery at their hospital, Ellis will take care of it without further cost to the patient. Learn how this type of program might be implemented at your facility.
Renowned nurse researcher Linda Aiken will bring convention to a close on Sunday with a discussion of the Institute of Medicine (IOM) and Robert Wood Johnson Foundation report on The Future of Nursing and its implications for the profession.

Make room in your schedule for convention favorites that include the Labor Day Unity Brunch, Nurses House “Fun Run” and the NYSNA awards banquet. For even more social fun, attendees can relax and enjoy a tour of the falls that includes a buffet dinner from a breathtaking view at Skylon Tower.
