NEW YORK NURSE: May 2011

Gratitude from the Japanese Nursing Association

by Robin Wood

As NYSNA President Karen Ballard reported in the last issue of New York Nurse, NYSNA’s Board of Directors sent a letter of support and a $1,000 donation to the Japanese Nursing Association (JNA) following the earthquake and tsunami that devastated the country in March.

Almost immediately, NYSNA received a return letter from JNA President Setsuko Hisatsune, thanking us for our “warm heart and action.”

Writing from a perspective just two weeks after the natural disaster, Hisatsune noted that the JNA was regularly dispatching volunteer nurses to affected areas. “While the nurses are heavily equipped with knowledge and skills of disaster nursing, and supplies to distribute to the people, they are most glad to receive the support and encouragement for their spirit . . . Now, I feel the presence of nurses around the world so close,” Hisatsune wrote.
