NEW YORK NURSE: October 2012
As November 6 gets closer, nurses are making phone calls, knocking on doors, and talking to their co-workers in support of candidates who support safe staffing legislation.
It’s all part of an unprecedented campaign to build real political muscle for bedside nurses and our patients.
Our work is already paying off – just look at the recent primaries across the state.
Three incumbents who have been safe staffing supporters - Republican Senator Mark Grisanti and Democratic Senator Tim Kennedy (both from the Buffalo area) and Brooklyn Democratic Assemblyman Nick Perry - all won their primaries.
So did NYSNA-supported candidate Patricia Fahy, who received 40 percent of the vote for the win in a six-way primary for an open Democratic assembly seat in the Albany area. NYSNA members in those districts received postcards and emails reminding them to vote for safe staffing supporters.
Now our focus has shifted to the general election on November 6.
NYSNA has picked eight critical races – all across the state – that could tip the balance for safe staffing legislation in 2013 in Albany.
Are you ready to get involved?
We all want to do our part for safe staffing.
But who has the time?
