REPORT: February 2005 Ask the ExpertsCall SPAN first!Q.: My employer caught me taking floor-stock medications for my use at home. I was suspended and told that the New York State Education Department (SED) would investigate and report me to its Office of Professional Discipline. A colleague suggested I call the SED’s Professional Assistance Program (PAP). The PAP referred me to NYSNA’s Statewide Peer Assistance for Nurses (SPAN) program. Why did I have to make so many calls to get help? A.: The short answer is: call SPAN first! SPAN works in collaboration with the state PAP. Each program complements the other. The PAP is the state-sponsored alternative to discipline — SPAN is a peer assistance program. SPAN was developed by, and is staffed by nurses who can help their peers effectively address their alcohol- and drug-related problems. The SPAN staff recognizes the unique challenges faced by nurses, such as the potential loss of their licenses, malpractice issues, and difficulties in returning to practice. SPAN outreach efforts are designed to help healthcare professionals recognize signs of chemical dependency and know what to do when they see a colleague in trouble.
