Ask the Experts

Should telemetry techs read rhythm strips?

Q.: Is it appropriate to train telemetry technicians in our hospital to read cardiac monitor rhythm strips and document their findings?

A.: Unlicensed assistive personnel, regardless of training, are prohibited by law to interpret or analyze assessment findings. Therefore, telemetry technicians are unable to document the patient’s rhythm or report on their cardiac activity. They can provide a recording of a patient’s cardiac activity. Unlicensed assistive personnel may be taught normal sinus rhythm and for any rhythm that is not normal, they must have the RN, nurse practitioner, physicians assistant or physician interpret. The role of unlicensed assistive personnel is to alert a licensed healthcare provider of cardiac rhythms that deviate from normal sinus rhythm. Lastly, the technical aspects associated with the equipment, alarms, and labeling of strips are all appropriate aspects that may be included in telemetry technician training.
