Presenters: Kelly Moed, MSN, RN-BC and Susan McQuade, MPH
This program will provide registered nurses and other healthcare participants information, resources, and the rationale for safe patient/resident handling. This will be the basis for developing safe patient handling programs in the healthcare environment.

Objectives

Describe the fundamentals of safe patient/resident handling
Discuss factors which justify implementation of a safe patient/resident handling ergonomic program in the healthcare setting
Identify principles of performing equipment, environment and organizational needs assessment
Explain the function and operation of various patient lift and transfer devices
Identify key elements for implementing and sustaining safe patient /resident handling programs
Discuss principles of adult learning and teaching methods as they relate to safe patient/resident handling training implementation
Verbalize identified Safe Patient Handling/Ergonomic Team training topics.

Participant Criteria

Individual must:

Be endorsed and supported by facility (provide letter from facility upon registration)
Have declared interest in safe patient handling
Have ability to educate, instruct and train colleagues in their facility
Be able to devote the time necessary to promote a successful Safe Patient Handling Program
Have a clinical background (e.g., RN, LPN, PT, OT, PCT, MD, PA) or be currently employed as a Health and Safety Specialist

The Train the Trainer Program has been funded, in part, by a grant to the Western New York Council on Occupational Safety & Health (WNYCOSH) from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, US Dept. of Labor, Susan Harwood Training Grant #SH-23528-12-60-F-36.

Contact Hours

A total of 18.0 CH will be awarded for all three days – participants must attend all three days in order to receive contact hours.

The New York State Nurses Association is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.
