Cheryl Powell, an RN at Wyckoff Medical Center, was the 2015 recipient of The Audrey Smith Campbell award.
On March 13, NYSNA, 1199SEIU, DC 37 AFSCME and TWU Local 100 marked International Women’s Month with a celebration and awards ceremony in New York City, recognizing women who have demonstrated courage, leadership, and passion as activists in the pursuit of justice and equality for all. NYSNA member Cheryl Powell, RN of Wyckoff Medical Center was recipient of the Audrey Smith Campbell Award from SEIU, for her role in the lengthy fight to keep Long Island College Hospital open for care.

Audrey Smith Campbell was a dedicated SEIU leader who lead a long strike in the Bronx in 2008 over cuts to workers’ health benefits at the Kingsbridge Nursing Home. Smith Campbell ultimately gave her life to the cause, when she collapsed on the picket line due to poor health. This year marks the first year that SEIU has expanded award nominations to union members outside of SEIU. NYSNA congratulates Cheryl Powell for this honor.
