Northwell South Shore University Hospital Nurses Are Ready

With their contract expiration date fast approaching on Feb. 28, 2025, NYSNA nurses at Northwell South Shore University Hospital (South Shore) are turning up the heat on Northwell to demand a fair contract. Nurses have been bargaining with the hospital for months but have become frustrated with the progress of negotiations and are ready to do whatever it takes to win a fair contract.
On Tuesday, Feb. 4, NYSNA nurses marched on the boss and delivered a petition to the executive director and chief nursing officer at South Shore. The petition, which hundreds of nurses signed, calls on management to deliver a fair contract with safe staffing, fair pay and improved benefits — the three core issues nurses have been fighting for at the bargaining table. Check out a video of SSUH’s march on the boss on NYSNA’s Facebook page.
While this action displayed nurses’ readiness to settle a fair contract before it expires at the end of this month, Northwell management has shown they are not serious about meeting the needs of nurses and patients. On Friday, Feb. 14, management came to the bargaining table unprepared and soon snuck away without addressing NYSNA members’ core demands.
Northwell should do well to remember that in 2023, NYSNA nurses at South Shore overwhelmingly authorized a strike, with 99% voting in favor. Their contract was eventually settled before a strike; however, nurses at South Shore demonstrated they are ready to do whatever it takes to win a fair contract. With two other facilities— Huntington Hospital/Northwell Health and Mount Sinai South Nassau—also fighting for fair contracts on Long Island, Shore Shore nurses will be able to count on the solidarity and support of their fellow Long Island nurses. All three facilities are ready to come together for safe staffing and respect for Long Island nurses and patients.
Solidarity with South Shore nurses in their fight for a fair contract!
