Victory: Catholic Health/St. Charles Nurses Reach Tentative Agreement on New Contract!
On late Wednesday night/early Thursday morning, NYSNA nurses at Catholic Health/St. Charles Hospital reached a tentative agreement on a new three-year contract! This victory comes after months of bargaining, during which nurses were locked in negotiations with management over enforceable safe staffing language. With safe, quality care on the line for their community, though, nurses refused to back down and would not settle a contract without the language necessary to hold hospital administrators accountable for understaffing. Other contract highlights include new protections against workplace violence, safeguards against discipline for using sick time, and the fair wages necessary to recruit and retain nurses. The average nurse will see an increase of approximately 15% over the life of the contract, including annual base salary increases and experience pay. Members will vote all day today on whether to ratify the new contract. Stay tuned for more details!
NYP-Brooklyn Methodist Nurses Deliver Solidarity Letters From Elected and Community Allies
This week, NYSNA nurses at NewYork-Presbyterian (NYP)-Brooklyn Methodist Hospital ramped up their fight for a fair contract. Nurses have been bargaining for a new contract for months and remain at odds with management over safe staffing and protections against workplace violence. On Thursday, elected officials, faith leaders, labor allies and community organizations delivered letters of solidarity to hospital administrators, calling on them to settle a fair contract that protects nurse and patient safety. Read the letters from elected officials and faith, labor and community allies.
With workplace violence on the rise at the hospital, NYP-Brooklyn Methodist still refuses to provide paid time off for victims of workplace violence to recover from traumatic events or injuries. Hospital executives are also trying to take the teeth out of the staffing enforcement language in the contract. Nurses aren’t willing to settle for anything less than the protections that nurses and patients deserve. Keep up the great work, NYP-Brooklyn Methodist nurses!
Mount Sinai South Nassau Nurses March on the Boss to Demand a Fair Contract
On Monday, July 6, NYSNA nurses at Mount Sinai South Nassau (MSSN) marched on the boss to demand a fair contract! Nurses delivered a petition to their chief nursing officer that asks management to agree to bargaining with the help of a mediator, to make negotiations accessible to all members via Zoom, and to settle a contract that respects Long Island nurses and patients. MSSN nurses have been bargaining for a fair contract that would address the healthcare giant’s lack of investment in their community hospital and ensure there are always enough nurses at the bedside to provide safe, quality patient care. Great work, MSSN nurses!
