NYSNA Nurses Win Tentative Agreement at Albany Med

New deal delivers enforceable safe staffing, major wage increases, and improved union protections that will make Albany Med the industry leader in the capital region.

NYSNA nurses will vote to ratify the contract on August 4-5.

Albany, N.Y. – New York State Nurses Association (NYSNA) nurses reached a new tentative agreement for a four-year contract that will benefit approximately 1,600 nurses at the hospital.

Highlights of the tentative agreement include:

  • Enforceable safe staffing ratios that will protect safe patient care.
  • Major wage increases that will make Albany Med the industry leader in the capital region and will help retain experienced nurses, including 16%-22% first-year wage increase upon ratification, market parity increases in 2 more years of the contract, additional 3% annual increases in the following years, and no wage caps for experienced nurses.
  • Improved union voice and protections.

Nurses are hopeful that the staffing improvements, along with wage increases and a stronger voice on the job, will help Albany Medical Center recruit and retain nurses to ensure that capital region patients receive the best care possible.

Jennifer Bejo, RN, and local union president at Albany Med said, “Nurses are committed to this community. All we wanted in this contract was safe staffing and the ability to provide the best care possible. Nurses tirelessly advocated for our patients for over a year. Together, we achieved a tentative agreement that will ensure patients receive the care they deserve and that nurses are respected so that they want to stay at this hospital.”

NYSNA President Nancy Hagans, RN, BSN, CCRN, said, “For over a year, Albany Med nurses have remained united, committed to patient care, and continued fighting for the future of this hospital. This is a landmark agreement which will make Albany Med an industry leader and shows the hospital’s commitment to working with nurses and improving safe patient care.

NYSNA Executive Director Pat Kane, RN, CNOR, said, “NYSNA nurses fought for this community and the future of this hospital. We are so proud of their strong commitment to advocate for their patients and make their hospital the best it can be. Every community deserves access to safe, quality care, and we look forward to continuing to work together to deliver what nurses, patients, and this community deserves.”

More details will be made available after NYSNA nurses vote to ratify the contract. The ratification vote is scheduled on August 4-5.
