Avian Influenza (H5N1) Health & Safety Guidelines
Avian influenza, or bird flu, has existed for a very long time, and there have been outbreaks among poultry in the U.S. in the past. However, the current outbreak of bird flu in the U.S., which involves influenza A H5N1, has spread the most aggressively so far. Besides infecting both domestic and wild birds, it has also spread to numerous mammal species. Many states have reported outbreaks among dairy cows. New York State has reported outbreaks among wild birds and domestic poultry, but it has not yet reported outbreaks among cattle.
While there have not yet been any reported human cases of avian influenza in New York State, it is important that nurses be prepared to safely care for potential patients.
