Modern monitoring systems leverage advanced technologies to continuously track patient vital signs, improve nurse response time, and enhance patient safety. They can also be programmed to alert healthcare professionals when patients reach a critical threshold and integrate with electronic health records to help nurses and doctors make informed clinical decisions.

Challenges to using modern, digital monitoring systems include alarm fatigue and limited direct patient interaction. According to the American Association of Critical Care Nurses (AACN), alarm fatigue can be significantly reduced if organizations develop and offer appropriate training for users and provide opportunities for interprofessional collaboration in the development of workflow designs and unit-specific alarm parameters.
