DOWNLOAD/LINKS
PURPOSE STATEMENT
Artificial intelligence (AI) is quickly changing the landscape of nursing and impacting the future for healthcare providers, patients and their loved ones. As the healthcare industry scrambles to keep up with recent changes in technology, nurses must prepare for a time when AI technologies will be utilized to meet the evolving needs of patients in many healthcare settings. The use of AI technologies in healthcare began with the introduction of theoretical concepts in the 1950s but has expanded to include practical applications to diagnosis and care delivery. AI has the potential to enhance nursing, but the healthcare industry must be careful to avoid overreliance on technological shortcuts that threaten safe staffing and appropriate patient care. The successful integration of AI in nursing will depend on ongoing education, appropriate safeguards, and a commitment to maintaining the compassionate, patient-centered approach that defines the profession.
