New York — NYSNA is saddened by the loss of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who was a trailblazer for equal rights. Her legacy of advocating for equal status under the law for women and men resonates with our members. Her cases paved the way for better pay in predominantly female occupations like nursing. They also challenged gender stereotypes, opening up a pathway for more men to become paid caregivers.  

After a very long and public battle with terminal cancer, her last wishes were well known — she wished for her role on the Supreme Court to not be filled until after the November presidential election. Those wishes are in line with past practice on replacing Supreme Court Justices, and may also ensure a more balanced judiciary branch of government. Labor rights, healthcare rights, and voting rights all hang in the balance with the next Court appointment. NYSNA is joining the call to honor Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s last wishes.
