TODAY: NYSNA NURSES TAKE ACTION ACROSS THE STATE AND DEMAND CONGRESS VOTE NO ON BUDGET BILL THAT WILL HARM MILLIONS OF NEW YORKERS
Together with Labor and Community Allies, Nurses Take Action in Key Congressional Districts and Call on Members of Congress to Vote No on Budget Bill
Nurses Demand Congress Fund Care, Not Billionaires
New York, NY - On Tuesday, July 2, New York State Nurses Association (NYSNA) nurses are uniting with labor and community allies to demand New York’s Republican members of the U.S. House of Representatives vote NO on the budget reconciliation bill the Senate narrowly passed yesterday.
Congress has the opportunity to vote down this harmful bill that will deepen cuts to Medicaid and other healthcare programs, remove access to care for over a million New Yorkers, decimate hospital funding, kill jobs, and negatively impact all New Yorkers.
Healthcare professionals and allies are taking action today at the following times and locations:
10 a.m.-12 p.m. Rep. Nicole Malliotakis, Brooklyn District NY-11 Office
7716 Third Avenue, Brooklyn, NY
12-2 p.m. Rep. Andrew Garbarino District NY-2 Office
31 Oak Street, Patchogue, NY 11772
3:30-5:30 p.m. Rep. Nicole Malliotakis Staten Island District NY-11 Office
1698 Victory Blvd, Staten Island, NY
3:30 p.m. Rep. Elise Stefanik (District NY-21)
1 Trinity Place, Plattsburgh, NY 12901
7:30-9:30 p.m. Rep. Mike Lawler Pearl River District NY-17 Office
1 Blue Hill Plaza, Pearl River, NY
Congress’ proposed cuts will increase the number of uninsured New Yorkers by over a million, will increase health insurance premiums for all, and could lead to the loss of $13.5 billion in federal healthcare funding for New York. Hospitals are projected to lose close to $1.4 billion statewide, which will increase costs, put hospitals at risk of closure, and result in the loss of thousands of jobs.
Yesterday, NYSNA and National Nurses United nurses rallied with patient advocates outside of Nicole Malliotakis’ district office in Staten Island, calling on her to vote down the harmful budget bill that the Senate narrowly passed. They asked her to sign a pledge to fund care, not billionaires, but Malliotakis' staff turned them away.
Over the last few months, NYSNA nurses and healthcare professionals have joined the majority of constituents to demand Congress stop the assault on our communities and our healthcare system. They have taken action across the state, called their local representatives, and spoken out to protect their patients and our healthcare system. Nurses are participating in more phone banks this week.
NYSNA and National Nurses United President Nancy Hagans, RN, BSN, CCRN, said: “We challenge elected representatives to have the courage to speak with the nurses in their communities and answer us directly: ‘Whose side are you on: billionaire donors or your constituents?’ The simple truth is that our country cannot afford to bankroll billionaire tax cuts on the backs of everyday Americans. Not only does Medicaid provide lifesaving, safety-net care to patients who would otherwise unnecessarily suffer and die, but it also is a powerful engine of local economies that employs tens of thousands of people.”
