NYSNA Nurses to Head to Albany to Support Merger of Maimonides and NYC H+H
Health Council to Vote Today on Approving Hospital Merger
Albany, N.Y. – New York State Nurses Association (NYSNA) nurses will travel to Albany on Thursday, Sept. 17 to support the proposed merger of Maimonides Medical Center with New York City Health+Hospitals, which is up for a vote by the New York State Department of Health’s Public Health and Health Planning Council (PHHPC). NYSNA released the following statement of support for the merger.
“We are in full support of protecting continuity of care and preservation of nursing jobs at Brooklyn’s only Level 1 adult and pediatric trauma center,” said NYSNA President Nancy Hagans, RN, BSN, CCRN, who has worked at Maimonides Medical Center for nearly 40 years. “In the face of federal funding cuts to healthcare, the state and city are doing the right thing by investing in protecting and improving the healthcare services our community needs. This merger would help ensure that Maimonides is able to provide the care our communities need for years to come.”
NYSNA nurses recently voiced support for the merger at the last PHHPC subcommittee meeting on Aug. 27. Nurses testified in favor of the merger, alongside 1199SEIU caregivers at Maimonides, noting that the merger would help protect access to care and deliver more resources for the diverse communities the hospital serves. Nurses emphasized that the partnership would deliver new capital investment in Maimonides, strengthen the hospital’s financial foundation, preserve staff and services, improve coordinated access to primary and specialty care, deliver culturally competent care, and improve nurse and patient voice through community advisory boards.
The PHHPC subcommittee overwhelmingly approved the merger proposal following public comments, and a full PHHPC vote is expected today.
The merger has broad support from healthcare workers at Maimonides, along with local Brooklyn City Council members. Ten elected officials submitted a joint letter of support for the merger earlier this week.
