Labor Unites for a Healthy Bronx

NYSNA nurses are joining up with other union caregivers and lawmakers for a Healthy Bronx. On Friday morning, we joined Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz, Jr., Doctors Council-SEIU, the Committee of Interns and Residents–SEIU, and NYC Central Labor Council head Vincent Alvarez to support the Family Health Challenge, an effort to educate and empower community members in the Bronx about healthy choices.

“We need to make sure that healthcare is affordable and accessible to our communities,” said Judy Sheridan Gonzalez, RN and NYSNA President. “This starts with prevention and education.”

Unequal access to healthcare means too many Bronx patients struggle to obtain access to care. The Family Health Challenge is part of the Healthy Bronx Initiative. By working with Bronx families, we can take steps toward addressing disparities in our community.

Borough President Diaz, Jr., noted the role of workers in community initiatives like this one. “The labor movement has always been active and vocal on issues inside and outside the workplace,” he said. “Today, I want to say thanks to all the nurses of this city for taking care of our people!”

That’s all part of our job. We’re patient advocates – at the bedside, in the legislature, and in our communities.
