This workshop will cover the basic concepts and skills involved in building a strategic, escalating campaign around staffing, wages, and benefits for nurses. With examples from NYSNA and other union campaigns, participants will be presented with strategies on how to put pressure on employers to achieve nurses’ contract demands.

This workshop will zero in on how we can use some of the same organizing strategies we use in our biggest fights -- contract campaigns or fights against closures – to make tangible, positive changes in day-to-day working conditions on our own units.

This workshop is open to new NYSNA members looking to learn more about how NYSNA works and how you can get more involved in the work of the union.

Learn what a union is, why we advocate, what this advocacy has looked like in recent examples, and learn more about the roles and rights of leaders.

Protests of Assignment (POAs) are an important organizing tool in the fight to win safe staffing. POA forms are used to track patterns and provide a record that will help nurses build their case and organize action plans for better staffing on their unit, at labor-management meetings, staffing committees and during contract negotiations, among others.

Learn about our basic rights as union members, including the right to representation, and learn how to do that representational work. You will also learn about our contract and what a grievance is.
