Deal Improves Safe Staffing Levels, Wages, and Preserves Benefits
New York, NY—Saturday afternoon, NYSNA nurses at NewYork-Presbyterian (NYP) finished counting the votes to approve a new contract. A new contract was ratified by a majority of members.
Highlights of the agreement include:
- Increases nurse staffing over the next three years.
- Improves staffing standards in the Milstein Emergency Department and staffing enforcement mechanisms.
- Preserves healthcare and other benefits, including retiree health and pension benefits
- Increases salaries over 3 years of the contract 7%, 6 %, and 5%.
- Increases experience differentials to retain nurses, bringing compounded raise to 19.5% over the life of the contract.
The contract ratification at NYP follows ratification yesterday at Maimonides Medical Center. To date, nurses at five New York City hospitals who were slated to strike on Monday have now reached tentative agreements or contracts. Those hospitals are NYP, Maimonides Medical Center, Richmond University Medical, Flushing Hospital Medical Center, and BronxCare. The Brooklyn Hospital Center, which had not delivered a notice to strike, also came to a tentative agreement late last night.
NYSNA NYC nurses have not reached agreements at three other hospitals in advance of the Jan. 9 strike start date. Those hospitals are Montefiore Bronx, Mount Sinai Hospital, and Mount Sinai Morningside and West. Bargaining is scheduled with Montefiore Bronx and Mount Sinai Morningside and West through the weekend. Mount Sinai walked away from the bargaining table late Thursday night and has yet to call back the NYSNA nurses. CORRECTION: Overall, there are more than 8,700 NYSNA nurses at these three facilities.
NYSNA will hold a press briefing tomorrow, Jan. 8 from 11:30 a.m.—12:00 p.m. with NYSNA President Nancy Hagans, RN, BSN, CCRN.
This short briefing will provide an update about what is happening with contract negotiations at hospitals that will strike beginning Jan. 9 unless tentative contract agreements can be reached. There will be opportunities to ask questions.
